Featherweight Showdown
Hamed/Barrera Showdown Approaching

By: Tony Scott

April 1, 2001

Las Vegas, NV (BoxingGurus.com) - The much-anticipated Featherweight showdown between "Prince" Naseem Hamed and Marco Antonio Barrera is only a few days away and Las Vegas has a buzz about it that is unprecedented for a Featherweight bout. The Prince will be making his Las Vegas debut, which is a bit surprising since Hamed is the ultimate showman and Las Vegas has been built on the glitz and glamour that made the Prince a star. The fight is a near sellout in MGM Grand's Garden Arena with over 8,500 of the arena's 10,000 seats sold and will be seen on PPV this Saturday night.

Hamed (35-0, 31 KO) has promised this fight will not go the distance, as one of the combatants will be knocked out. "I'm not thinking about a points win, I'm going for the KO and I feel it's going to be quite early," he said. "It won't go really late." Barrera responded by saying, "I hope that they're taking me lightly so I can knock him out on April 7."

Barrera (52-3-0-1, 38 KO) is a 3-1 underdog, but said he is used to that kind of role, "I feel more motivated when I'm the underdog. We are getting ready to fight Hamed with our style," he said. "We don't like his style but we're ready for it. I prefer Hamed to come to fight, but if he just starts to run we've got something for that also."

Even though both fighters have been talking their share of smack, they both have a great deal of respect for each other. Both fighters deep down know this fight is for Featherweight supremacy, as they believe Barrera beat Erik Morales last year. Morales won a very close but controversial decision and went on to win the WBC Featherweight Title. The winner of the Hamed/Barrera Superfight is expected to challenge Morales.

On the undercard, Omar Sheika takes on Stephane Ouellet in a very important 10-round Super Middleweight bout. The winner will most likely get another title shot sometime soon and the loser might be out of title contention all together. Sheika (21-2, 14 KO) recently was defeated by Joe Calzaghe by a 6th round TKO because of cuts and has since rebounded with a big 1st round KO of Lloyd Bryan. Ouellet (29-3, 18 KO) won a bittersweet victory over Dave Hilton in September of 2000 redeeming two of his three losses. Hilton went on to win the WBA Super Middleweight Title, so Ouellet is definitely a world-class fighter.

Also, three former United States 2000 Olympians will be in action. Jermain Taylor (1-0, 1 KO) will be facing Kenny Stubbs (9-4, 7 KO); Clarence Vinson (1-0, 0 KO) will challenge Bryan Garcia (4-3, 1 KO); and Michael Bennett (2-0, 2 KO) will take on Billy Zumbrun (4-2-1, 3 KO).
