Kirk Johnson had put his name
on the top of the list of Heavyweight contenders with his knockout victory
over Oleg Maskaev and a decisive decision over Larry Donald. Johnson
had showen great punching ability and ring savvy and positioned himself
as the mandatory opponent for John Ruiz. But when Johnson finally
got his shot against Ruiz, he laid an egg. He repeatedly hit Ruiz
low and after getting two points deducted, the referee DQ'd Johnson. The
fight was very close at the time and without the point deductions, Johnson
would have been winning. Johnson recently had a good step forward with a
stoppage victory over Lou Savarese, hopefully with a few other victories
ove rth like of Top 20 guys, Johnson can get his confidence back and then
get another title shot. |
